Join us in Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design
My name is Jolene Fisher and I’m an assistant professor in the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design at the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI).
After working on strategic communication campaigns for a variety of organizations in Singapore, I returned to the United States to study international communication. Through that process, I became fascinated by the use of video games as a tool for international development and social change. I came to CU Boulder to teach and continue this research, and was excited to join a new college where all of us—students included—have a role in shaping CMCI’s future.
One of my favorite classes to teach is Strategic Communications Campaigns, where students develop campaigns for real-world clients. Recent clients include an internationally known running shoe company, a screen-printing business that supports a homeless youth shelter and representatives from Boulder County’s Food Waste Awareness campaign. It’s a great opportunity for students to apply what they’ve learned to develop a real campaign—often targeted toward a social issue. They’re creating something that contributes to shaping culture, and I think that’s what makes our curriculum so exciting.
Speaking of culture, our students had an amazing opportunity this summer to tour museums, explore historic landmarks and go on agency visits throughout Paris and beyond as part of the study abroad program. As one of two faculty directors of the Global Seminar on International Strategic Communication, I see so much value in students’ ability to gain an international perspective on the advertising and public relations fields. There are so many ways for students to broaden their learning experiences at CMCI, both in and out of the classroom.
I hope you will apply to join us at CMCI this fall as we work together to shape this new model of a college!
