Frey named to CSCA Hall of Fame
Dr. Larry Frey, a professor and associate chair of graduate studies in the Department of Communication, has been inducted into the hall of fame of the Central States Communication Association.
The Central States Communication Association (CSCA) Hall of Fame award is presented annually to individuals who have been a member of the association for 25 years or more and who have contributed to the discipline of communication through scholarship, teaching, participation at conventions and service to the association.
"Professor Frey’s record of professional achievement reflects a degree of selflessness that is rare among individuals high in accomplishment within the academic community. . ." remarked Dennis Gouran, a professor at Pennsylvania State University who nominated Frey for the honor. "For the more than thirty-five years I have known him, his demeanor has been that of genuinely altruistic impulse."
Frey was joined by Dr. Pamela Cooper of the University of South Carolina, Beaufort in this year's class of inductees. David McMahan, president of the assocation, described Frey and Cooper as "among the most prolific scholars in the discipline of communication, and their scholarship has enhanced the discipline in important and meaningful ways." Over his career, Frey has pioneered research on communication in natural groups and communication activism for social justice. Both areas have since become important topics of research within the communication discipline.
"I am deeply honored to be elected to CSCA’s Hall of Fame," Frey said. "As an undergraduate, CSCA was the first convention that I ever attended; as a graduate student, I presented my first paper at a CSCA convention; and as a brand new faculty member, my first article was published in CSCA’s journal. . . To now be elected to CSCA’s Hall of Fame, which includes so many giants of the communication discipline is the highest honor of my career."
