Dr. Michael Bunting is a recognized leader in workplace and educational testing, with over 25 years of experience advancing research innovation, strategic planning, and organizational growth. His expertise spans securing extramural funding, developing research infrastructure, and leading high-impact initiatives in national security and assessment. Notably, Dr. Bunting has successfully established three Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract vehicles with the Department of Defense ($92 million ceiling) and the Intelligence Community ($60 million and $25 million ceilings).

As Deputy Executive Director (DED) at the Center for National Security Initiatives (NSI) at the University of Colorado Boulder, Dr. Bunting plays a pivotal role in shaping NSI’s vision and operations. He oversees business development, strategy, and security, managing classified research environments to ensure compliance and operational excellence. By fostering partnerships with government agencies, industry leaders, and academia, Dr. Bunting drives research growth and identifies emerging opportunities to position NSI as a leader in national security innovation.

Collaborating closely with the NSI Director, Dr. Bunting enhances internal communications, marketing efforts, and strategic relationships while advocating for innovation and alignment within the CU system. His responsibilities extend to managing NSI’s financial, human resources, and administrative functions, where he ensures alignment with university policies and supports broader research community goals. His commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion further strengthens NSI’s culture of collaboration and innovation.

Dr. Bunting’s contributions include the creation of a groundbreaking research program in cognitive training and the development of multiple high-profile aptitude assessments for the Department of Defense, such as the High-Level Language Aptitude Battery (Hi-LAB), Cyber Aptitude and Talent Assessment (CATA), Computer Language Aptitude Battery (CLAB), Defense Language Aptitude Battery 2 (DLAB2), and the Regional Proficiency Assessment Tool (RPAT). He also co-founded a company to commercialize these instruments, securing startup funding from the State of Maryland and other investors.

With extensive experience leading organizations through change, growth, and redevelopment, Dr. Bunting has mentored research faculty, undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students across all career stages. His adaptive leadership style and deep understanding of the national security landscape continue to inspire collaboration and innovation, cementing his reputation as a visionary in research and development.
