Mission Statement:

  1. The Cultural Events Board aims to broaden cultural knowledge by supporting the voices of underrepresented and misrepresented groups on campus, thereby promoting student engagement with their platforms. The Cultural Events Board encourages opportunities for interaction among students resulting in respect, appreciation, and understanding for cultural differences.

  1. They are planning to upscale a lot compared to their past events, and thought 350 was a reasonable estimate of attendees.

7:45 PM – Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) - “Chinese New Year Festival” on Feb 2nd from 4:30-9:30 PM at Glenn Miller Ballroom

  1. Chinese New Year celebration
  1. One of must significant holidays in Chinese culture
  1. Allows students to gain insight into customs, values, and history of Chinese culture
  1. Unite Chinese students on campus, while inviting those of other cultures to experience Chinese celebrations

  1. Will have various performances throughtout the event
  1. This ear, the org is trying to have more hands-on experiences, such as getting to wear traditional Chinese clothing

  1. Faults from 2022, how will we improve
  1. There were three committees, planning, communication, and design
  1. The responsibilities of each committee were not clearly defined in the 2022 event
  1. This year they have a new committee called event support, which takes a more hands-on approach to the behind-the-scenes logistics of the event.

  1. After advertising, they will implement an RSVP system

  1. They have connections with many Chinese student organizations across other states, who they will reach out to and invite to their event

  1. The org gave up on doing the custom menu, however, they are open to looking into a custom menu
  1. How much of the event will be in Mandarin?
  1. Clarifying for translation purposes/requirements
  1. There will be English translations of everything; one MC speaking in English, one in Mandarin
  1. How will the org reach out to the broader CU community?
  1. They are hoping to spread the word through connections as well as other student organizations
  1. In addition to this, they are in the process of creating a marketing campaign

8:15 PM – Asian Pacific American Law School Association (APALSA) - “Lunar New Year Celebration” on Jan 24th from 6:00-9:00 PM at Wolf Law

  1. Lunar new year follows Buddhist calendar and signifies the new year for those who follow it

  1. Also planning on getting notice of the event to other RSOs on campus
  1. The org has connections to the Asian bar association and will be in contact with them as well
  1. Why was the event not held in 2023, and what was attendance in 2022?
  1. Last year's exec board was only two people, so conducting this event would not be feasible
  1. Guest Speaker?
  1. They are trying to get the president of the Asian Bar Association
  1. If not him, then another attorney from the Asian Bar Association
  1. They wanted to get a speaker from the greater legal community

  1. Hopefully on experiences with lunar new years growing up (celebrations, etc.)

8:30 PM – CU Boulder Asian Studies Graduate Association (CUBASGA)- “CUBASGA Annual Conference 2025” on Feb. 22nd and 23rd  from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM and 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM at Norlin Library British and Irish Room

  1. Will consist of 30-40 presenters
  1. 10-15 panels, with 3-4 presentations per panels
  1. There will be an anticipated audience of 50+
  • Will hopefully consist of students and faculty in related fields, as well as students/faculty from other departments
  • Goal is to cover topics from Chinese and Japanese cultures from both modern and historical periods
  • This year they are planning on giving undergraduate students more opportunities to participate in presentations.

  1. How will the selection process for presenters happen?
  • They will conduct interviews, discuss them, and then review and make a final selection on presenters
  1. How will they reach out to more undergrads
  • They are planning on doing more advertising
  • Also planning on reaching out to undergrads, and encouraging them to spread the word of their event
  1. Any changes that they want to make to the event?
  • They are planning to have an earlier deadline for presenters to get a spot in the event (due to issues with having a later deadline last year)
  • Planning on having more targeted Q&A sessions

  • This event is aimed to magnify exposure of APIDA heritage and the exposure to their cultures
  • Culture shock is also aimed to help alleviate the sense of shock POC students may feel when coming to a PWI

  • The org is close with performers who have both performed in the past and who are open to performing at this event

9:00 PM – Black Law Student Association (BLSA) - “Black History Month Celebration” on Feb 27th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Wolf Law

  • Event will have food as well as an African Dance performance
  • The Dance usually gets crowds involvement

  1. How will they get people involved
  • They are planning on doing a marketing campaign, which includes submitting it to the law school
  1. How will they talk about black hist ory
  • The performers will explain the significance of their dances before the performances
  • The origins and significance of the food will also be talked about

  • Last year, the attendance was 40-50 and they are expecting the same attendance

  • Marketing will be given to the entire CU campus, as well as the law school

First Funding Cycle

Bengali Cultural Society - “Durga Puja” on October 12th and 13th from 10:00 AM – 7:30 PM and 9:30 AM – 7:30 PM at JSCBB

  1. Advertising
  • They were requesting advertising 48 hours before their event 
  • Did not print posters
  • Did not get full advertising money funded because they never clarified what their advertising was for
  • Didn't see any advertising, except for JSBCC, which was plastered with posters
  1. Logistics
  • Was hard to find the entrance 
  • Required texting via a QR code
  • There was no food when it was advertised in the ROD
  • The food was there, but it was not served
  • Those who had the food said it was ‘pretty good’
  • They were giving out pins/ribbons to support Palestine and women's rights
  • The idol was delayed and did not arrive at the event in time
  • Used a canvas with portraits of the god as a replacement

  • Those who went were not able to follow the event at all
  • Those who went who were Hindu were also not able to follow it 
  • In between introducing performances there was no translation
  • Introductions to the event were also done in Bengali
  • Performances for the most part were very good
  • Some performances encouraged audience participation
  • Decorations were used and set up well

  • Should not be funded for an idol because they already got funded and got one shipped internationally

  • Time management for the event could have been MUCH better

Iranian Students at CU Boulder - “Yalda Night” on December 6th from 6:00-10:00PM at WVCC Multipurpose Room

  1. Pre-spending meeting has been done, with a few notes:
  1. The meeting was not done with their liaison Sue, but rather with Nora, though everything still should have been covered. 
  1. We asked them about possibly adding vegetarian options, they said the grape leaves on their menu are vegetarian.
  1. If more vegetarian options were to be added, it could be done but it would be a slightly tedious process with the C4C and would take about two weeks. 
  1. “the stuffed grape leaves is not an appetizer/side in persian food culture and it definitely is a whole entry.”
  1. We also asked them about the cultural significance of the nuts and fruits in their budget request and it turns out they are very symbolic and significant for this type of celebration and not all stores sell them; it would not be complete without them. 
  1. They would like to know when/if the nuts and fruits would be approved, when do we think that could happen, and when would the email be sent letting them know our decision?
