IPHY Major change announcement

The following email went out to all IPHY majors on 2/12/2020.

Dear IPHY majors,

The College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee has approved 2 changes to the IPHY major. These curricular changes were strategically planned and are based on discussions with faculty, advisors, solicited input from students, and comparisons with other undergraduate physiology programs. Starting in Fall 2020, the following changes will be implemented:

  1. The current two-semester/6 credit Human Physiology sequence is being revised into a one-semester/4 credit Human Physiology course.

  2. IPHY 2800 Intro to Statistics is being replaced by IPHY 3280 Intro to Data Science & Biostatistics.

Please continue reading for more information on these changes and how they might impact you. We have included a FAQ section at the end that will answer many pressing questions.  There will also be additional advisors available during Biology drop-ins this week.

Human Physiology: The current 2 semester sequence (IPHY 3470 & 3480) is being reformatted into a 1 semester course with a recitation.

We are shifting a 2-semester physiology sequence (IPHY 3470+3480) to a 1-semester physiology course with a recitation (IPHY 3430).

Starting in fall 2020, IPHY 3430-4 will include a recitation and will be open to both majors and non-majors. The recitation will be a chance to apply lecture material and will incorporate case studies. The addition of the recitation adds a credit hour to make this a 4 credit course. How might that affect you?

  • If you have completed the majors physiology requirement (i.e IPHY 3470 & 3480), then this does not affect you.

  • If you have not started the physiology sequence (IPHY 3470 & 3480), then you will take IPHY 3430-4, starting Fall 2020.

  • If you have taken IPHY 3470, you can complete the sequence by taking IPHY 3480 in summer 2020 during B term, or in the Fall 2020 semester.

  • If you have taken part of the physiology sequence (IPHY 3470 or IPHY 3480) and are unsure how to complete the sequence, please speak to your academic advisor.

  • There will still be Human Anatomy and Chemistry prerequisites:

    • IPHY 3430 Prereqs:  C- or better in CHEM 1113+1114 and IPHY 3410.

    • IPHY 3430 Prereq or Co-Req:  CHEM 1133+1134.

  • There is no change to IPHY 3435 Human Physiology Lab. IPHY 3435 can be taken either with IPHY 3430 or after it.

  • If your physiology requirement is not complete and you have transfer credit for A&P 1 and 2, please speak to your academic advisor.

Statistics Change: IPHY 2800 is being replaced by IPHY 3280

IPHY 2800 Intro to Statistics is being replaced by an upper division IPHY 3280 Intro to Data Science and Biostatistics course.

  • If you have already completed your IPHY stats requirement (check your degree audit), this change doesn’t impact you.

  • If you have not completed your statistics requirement, you should take IPHY 3280.

Timeline of Changes:

  • IPHY 3470 (Human Physiology 1) - last offered Spring 2020

  • IPHY 3480 (Human Physiology 2) -last offered Fall 2020 (also offered Summer 2020)

  • IPHY 3430 (Human Physiology) - will be 4 credits, starting in Fall 2020

  • IPHY 2800 (Intro to Statistics) - last offered Summer 2020

  • IPHY 3280 (Intro to Data Science & Biostatistics) -  first offered Fall 2020

Degree Audit:

The degree Audit will be updated to reflect the change in physiology by 10 AM Thursday.

Transfer Students:

If you have transfer credit for A&P 1 or A&P 1 AND 2, please speak to your academic advisor before registering for summer and/or fall.  (Only needed if your degree audit shows the physiology requirement is not complete).

Additional Advising Drop-ins this Week:

  • To help ease the transition, and address questions/concerns, we will have additional advisors on drop-ins this week.

  • All Biology Advisors will be on drop-ins TODAY (2/12).  We will then have 3-4 advisors on drop-ins the rest of the week.

  • Biology drop-in advising is in Porter B126 from 1-2:45 Monday-Friday

FAQs - Physiology

  1. I have not taken a physiology lecture yet.  How does this affect me?

    • You will take IPHY 3430.

  2. I was planning to take IPHY 3470 this summer, but it is not offered. Can I take IPHY 3430?

    • Yes, but you will only earn 3 credit hours.

  3. I am currently enrolled in IPHY 3470.  What do I do?

    • Complete IPHY 3470 this semester and then either take IPHY 3480 or 3430 to complete your IPHY requirement.

    • Does this mean I will be taking an extra class?  No. You need to reach 30 hours of IPHY, so your physiology credits will help you towards that requirement.

  4. Does it look bad if I take IPHY 3470 and then IPHY 3430?

    • No, you just need to fulfill the specific number of credits for physiology that are specified by the health professions programs you are applying to.

  5. Does this change affect how many IPHY classes I have to take?

    • No.  The IPHY major still requires 30 hours of IPHY.  Students taking 1 semester of physiology will need a bit more elective IPHY credits to get to 30 hours.

  6. I took IPHY 3430 before deciding to declare the IPHY major.  Will this count towards physiology requirement?

    • Yes.  We will retroactively accept IPHY 3430, but you will only earn 3 credit hours.

  7. Does the physiology change affect how many hours of physiology are required for the IPHY Major?

    • No. The IPHY major still will require 38 hours (30 hours IPHY + 8 hours of your bio sequence).

  8. I took IPHY 3470 and did not do well. Can I take IPHY 3430 and use grade replacement?

    • Unfortunately, no. The University’s grade replacement policy states that the course has to have the exact same catalog number.

FAQs - Stats

  1. I took IPHY 2800 and did not do well.  Can I take IPHY 3280 and use grade replacement?

    • Unfortunately, no.  The University’s grade replacement policy states that the course has to have the exact same catalog number.

  2. Why is the stats course number changing?

    • The course is undergoing enough of a revision that the college considers it to be a new course.

    • The change to upper division will benefit students as they work towards the 45 credits upper division.

    • It also allows graduate students who have not had stats to take the class.

  3. If I already took IPHY 2800, is there any benefit to taking IPHY 3280?

    • No. You will not get credit for IPHY 3280 if you already have IPHY 2800.

  4.  When I take the new IPHY stats course will it count in other departments that require stats?

    • Check with the academic advisor for that other major/minor/certificate

  5. Will my prehealth program accept the new IPHY stat course?

    • Yes
