Internship Summary:  Rocky Mountain National Park is recruiting for 1 greenhouse intern to perform as a volunteer for the National Park Service. The position will be located at Rocky Mountain National Park’s greenhouse facility near the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, Estes Park, CO from February to May, 2020 with a possible extension to September. Intern will support the park’s Native Plant Restoration Plan by growing and maintaining native plant material to be used for 2020 ecological restoration projects. The greenhouse facility is approximately 1440 square feet, and can produce over 35,000 plants each spring.  An outdoor nursery facility surrounds the greenhouse, and has the capacity for over 70,000 plants.

 

Duties:  Individuals with excellent communication skills, a solid work ethic, and an enthusiastic personality are encouraged to apply. The intern must be able to work independently, often times performing repetitive tasks. Under the supervision of the greenhouse manager or other park staff, the Intern will germinate, propagate, transplant, and care for native plants. Other duties will include native plant identification, seed cleaning and scarification, basic greenhouse maintenance, troubleshooting irrigation systems, fertilization, weeding, pest management, record keeping, and volunteer communications and organizing. The Intern will maintain plant material both inside the greenhouse and outside in the nursery. The ideal candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Word, and Excel and have some prior greenhouse or horticulture experience or education. 

 

Position Details:  This is an Intern position that will work approximately 40 hours per week.  Incumbent must possess a valid state driver’s license. Optional park housing will be provided at no cost to the Intern, which typically consists of a shared apartment within walking distance to the greenhouse facility. Internship will run for 16 weeks (32 weeks if extended) with a living stipend of $240 weekly. Approximate dates of service are Monday, Feb 3rd, through Friday, May 22nd, 2020.
