JOB DESCRIPTION:
NORC's 2019 Summer Internship in Survey Research is a 9-week, full-time, paid position for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students with interests in social science and survey research. The program is designed to introduce interns to the design, implementation, and analysis of large surveys conducted by mail, by phone, face-to-face, and by Web. Interns will explore recent innovations in data collection techniques, survey platforms, and the integration of survey data with other types of data such administrative records and social media.

NORC offers a range of capabilities in public health, including technical assistance, program evaluation, and quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Our team includes prominent health policy experts, nationally recognized public health researchers with general and specialized expertise in areas such as rural health and tribal issues, skilled methodologists, and leaders in the field of survey design and implementation. Our staff also brings expertise in populations of special interest and the intersection of public health and health care delivery. We offer broad, multidisciplinary experiences spanning public health, epidemiology, statistics, policy, developmental psychology, economics, sociology, social work, and political science.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The dates for the 2019 program are Monday, June 17th to Friday, August 16th. The hourly rate of pay for undergraduates is $18 and the hourly rate of pay for graduates is $20.
Interns are typically assigned to an ongoing NORC survey project with a focus on public health, health care, education, or economics, and the whole intern cohort is expected to conduct a small-scale study. A seminar series geared towards understanding the principles of survey research will be offered during the program for interns to attend. In previous years, interns have worked on the National Immunization Survey, the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, and the National Longitudinal Study of Youth, among other projects. In recent years, the group project – led by a senior NORC survey methodologist – has focused on new data collection platforms and data collection methods. The intent of the program is to expose interns to all facets of the survey process—from designing research questions to developing appropriate modes for data collection to formulating new analyses of results.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Preparation in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
- Skills in statistical or general-purpose programming (e.g., SAS, Python, R, Java) recommended
