A Handbook of Mammals of Rocky Mountain National Park and Vicinity

Third Edition (2008)

By David M. Armstrong, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology

University Press of Colorado

As with previous editions (1975, 1987), this book is intended to help visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park better understand and appreciate the mammals of the area, by describing their diversity, habits, and complex relationships with their environments.

The work is based on field work by Armstrong and his students in recent decades as well as a review of the literature. Thanks to the excellent work of the Rocky Mountain Nature Association, this edition includes color photographs of most species in the Park.

The underlying motivation for the book is the belief that the more visitors know about their surroundings, the more they enjoy them. Further, the more visitors enjoy the natural environment the more tenacious they will be in protecting it for future generations — generations of people and pine squirrels.
