'The scholarship has helped me succeed in college'

Britany Ederveen

Six questions for Britany Ederveen, University of Colorado student and recipient of a Buffalo Bicycle Classic Scholarship.

1.What are you studying, and what drew you to this discipline?

I am currently a psychology/English/secondary-education major-thing.

2. What do you hope to be doing in a decade?

I hope to graduate, get a teaching job for a few years, and then go back to graduate school!

3. If you could tell a prospective college student only one thing about higher education, what would it be?

These are the four tips to success I recently gave my college-bound sister: a) go to office hours, b) sit in the front, c) try to speak every class, and, d) expect college to be way more than you ever imagined—you do a lot of learning, not just academic!

4. What have you found most memorable or meaningful about your time at CU?

CU has so many great things to offer. I have really enjoyed taking advantage of the “free” things—movies, etiquette dinners, henna tattoos, career services, speakers, drinks at Chipotle, etc. I try to go to as many free things as possible. It has helped me to expand my interest levels and do things I would never have thought to do before! Plus, I have been able to meet some really outstanding and inspirational people.

5. What activities or extracurricular activities do you participate in on campus?

I was on the CU Express Dance team, and I participated in a couple leadership groups and a research study with Judi's House (a place of “hope and healing for grieving children and families”) through the psychology department. I also do Corepower Yoga Clean for Trade, tutor a variety of people (from middle school to college aged), and am still active in the dance community.

6. What does it mean to you that you were selected as a Buffalo Bicycle Classic scholar?

When I found out about the scholarship, I was floored with excitement! To be picked among the 6,000 other of my freshmen peers was an honor. The scholarship has helped me to succeed in my college career, not only financially, but also because it gave me to confidence to know I was doing the right things. I love wearing my BBC Scholar T-Shirts around campus, meeting the other outstanding students, and greeting the sponsors. It is truly an amazing organization, shaping the bright futures of CU students!

The Elevations Buffalo Bicycle Classic, which raises funds for scholarships, includes ride distances of 14, 35, 50, 70 and 100 miles. To learn more about the Sept. 11 event or to register, click here.
