Longtime theatre prof wins lifetime award

Theatre & Dance Professor Emeritus Richard Devin

Theatre & Dance Professor Emeritus Richard Devin has been granted the prestigious Honorary Lifetime Member Award by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology.

He is only the 11th recipient of this distinction, first given to Samuel Scripps. The award is presented for a lifetime of continuous service to the institute and confirms both continuous and distinguished service as well as conferring a lifetime membership on the recipient.

Devin is also the former Colorado Shakespeare Festival producing artistic director.

Dr. Joel E. Rubin, past president and founding member of the USITT, presented Devin with the award in March. Rubin said Devin “is well-known to all of us, and the accomplishments of this person are so distinguished that the award could have been made years ago.”

Devin has worked as the artistic and resident lighting designer for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and for theatres in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Cairo and Off-Broadway. He has served USITT as president, fellow of the institute, vice-president of commissions and continues to serve on the group’s committees and as an editor for the journal Theater Design & Technology.

Philip C. Sneed, producing artistic director for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, extended his “heartiest congratulations for an award well deserved!”
