The Boulder Bridge Club will host a “Learn Bridge in a Day” event in Boulder on May 21, and the event is offering the deal to CU-Boulder students for $10. The price for others is $25.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elks Lodge at 3975 28th Street in Boulder.

Diane Mayer, a senior instructor emerita in philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder, is a member of the club who says exposure to bridge often sparks lasting interest.

In that sense, she says, bridge is like philosophy. Student who have signed up for philosophy a course to fulfill a core-curriculum requirement often became “very interested” in the discipline.

“I think bridge is like that,” Mayer observes. “Everybody played when I was in college in the ‘60s, and almost no one does now, because they have not been exposed.”

Nonetheless, bridge is popular enough at several good schools that it spawns collegiate teams that compete nationally in college tournaments. “I think it would be great if CU joined that crowd,” she says.
