CU Theatre & Dance presents 'Woyzeck'

New adaptation of the stage play “Woyzeck” by Georg Büchner runs Oct. 21 through Oct. 25

Continuing its 2015-16 season, CU-Boulder Theatre & Dance presents Woyzeck: The Endless Cycle 1.0—a new adaptation of the stage play “Woyzeck” by Georg Büchner—at the Loft Theatre in the University Theatre Building on campus, Oct. 21-25.

“We’re using a classic piece of theater to ask the audience to recognize how the inequalities in society topical to the time of the play’s creation have resurfaced in another vicious cycle,” says director William W. Lewis—graduate instructor and second year doctoral student in theater and performance—of the premiere of this original work, three years in the making with playwright Charlie Biscotto.

“We use a combination of medias—including projected live film, contemporary video montage and interactive digital technology—to show the relevance of the themes to our current social, political and cultural milieu.” Indeed, this expressionistic adaption of Büchner’s “Woyzeck” draws on affect and reception theories, juxtaposing film, Internet technology and modern media influences.

“One exciting aspect of this production is that it’s not a singular event,” Lewis continues. Prior to the play’s opening, a transmedia narrative will launch at endlesscyclecu.com for interested theatergoers to get to know the characters and the world of the play before stepping into the theater.

“The characters of the play will present a narrative of what’s happening in their lives two weeks before the play’s plot begins,” explains Lewis. “In real-time, their stories will unfold through social media, blogs and fictional institutional websites.” When the digital pre-show launches on Oct. 7, users can access these stories via the “Character” or “Daily Updates” pages at endlesscyclecu.com.

Join us in Lewis’ exploration of the impact of society on the fragile psychology of one individual.
