Tibet Himalaya Initiative launches in conjunction with Dalai Lama visit
In conjunction with His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to CU-Boulder in October, the university is launching a Tibet Himalaya Initiative with a series of events throughout the fall.
These events are coming up:
- José Cabezón of UC Santa Barbara will deliver a lecture on "Love and Lust in Classical South Asian Buddhism" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, in the British Studies Room, fifth floor of Norlin Library.
- Sarah Magnatta will speak on "Portraits of Presence: The Dalai Lama in Traditional & Contemporary Imagery at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Humanities 250.
The line-up of events this fall also includes film screenings for "Tibetan Stories" and "Drokpa (Nomads)" and a public panel on "China, the Dalai Lama and Tibet" with CU faculty sponsored by the Center for Asian Studies.
CU-Boulder has unique research strength in the study of contemporary Tibet and the Himalayas, with faculty expertise in anthropology, art history, geography and religious studies, as well as a significant location in the history of the spread of Tibetan Buddhism in the West.
The Tibet Himalaya Initiative is an interdisciplinary hub for research, teaching, and public engagement on Tibet and the Himalayas.
The initiative seeks to promote scholarship and raise awareness about the challenges faced by Tibet and the Himalayas as the region undergo rapid social, cultural, and environmental transformations.
