Review the Following Responsibilities Examples (NOTE: These are examples. Instructors should create their own version of duties):

Teaching Team Meeting  (~1 hr/wk)

  • Attend weekly teaching team meeting

Lectures  (1 hour/session, 3 sessions/wk; OR 1.5 hour/session, 2 sessions/wk)

  • Attend lecture, assist in lecture activities.  This may include helping/checking-in with students during discussion periods and may include helping with demonstrations
  • Review lecture slides before lecture for familiarity with topics

Night Labs  (Dependent upon course. Up to 6 sessions per semester; average of ~3 hours/session)

  • Run night labs, in partnership with TAs from other sections of ASTR 1000/1200
  • Become familiar with constellations/bright stars needed for constellation lab
  • Become familiar with moon features needed for moon lab
  • Plan observing targets for night lab based on season/moon brightness, etc.
  • Cancel observing nights if cloudy (message students / leave sign on door of observatory).
  • Report all observatory problems to Rose the day they happen (labs happen every night!)
  • Announce in lab which night labs (moon or deep sky) will be available in the next week
  • Arrange appropriate turn-in date based on observing night (typically within 2 weeks)
  • Grade, upload, and return night labs to students no later than 1 week after due date

Grading

  • Help coordinate grading by undergraduate grader

Exams  (~6 hours in each of four exam/final weeks? - otherwise nothing)

  • Help grade written questions on midterms + final

Office Hours

  • Coordinate these through the Astronomy Help Room (AHR)

Miscellaneous

  • Arrange substitutions for any duties well in advance and inform instructor

Let Instructor know if workload becomes a problem; we may be able to adjust

Teaching Team Meeting  (~1.5 hr/wk)

  • Attend weekly teaching team meeting
  • Present the intro to 1-2 labs during the semester at the weekly teaching team meeting

Labs  (~1.5 hrs prep + 2 hours/session/wk)

  • Go through lab in its entirety before teaching; go to SBO beforehand and use the equipment if necessary
  • Prepare / adapt lab introduction slides / materials
  • Run lab session
  • After lab session ends, enter any comments in Slack or other teaching team communication platform
  • Inform Rose or SBO staff of equipment problems, etc.
  • Inform Instructor ASAP and well in advance if schedule conflict arises

Grading Labs  (~2 hrs/session/wk)

  • Help Instructor make timely solution sets for the lab
  • Grade lab and post lab using provided solutions
  • Upload grades to Canvas no later than one week after lab turned in
  • Report all instances of cheating/copying to instructor. Grade and record the labs independent of any cheating.

  • Become familiar with moon features needed for moon lab

  • Go through lab in its entirety before teaching; go to SBO beforehand and use the equipment if necessary
  • Prepare lab introductions on weeks where you introduce the lab
  • Assist TA in running the lab session, interacting with lab groups
  • After lab session ends, enter any comments in Slack or other teaching team communication platform

Lecture  (as appropriate; ~1.5 hr/wk)

  • Assist with small group discussions as they occur
  • Give Instructor feedback upon request after each lecture
  • Help to develop lecture activities and content in collaboration with Instructor
  • Teach 1 lecture, if desired, and instructor agrees

Office Hours  (as desired; ~2 hr/wk)

  • Hold 1.5-2 hours of office hours per week

Night Labs  (as desired; average of ~2 hours/session)

  • Attend and support night lab sessions

Miscellaneous

  • Try to answer class questions based on class syllabus but direct to Lecture TA if unsure
  • Arrange substitutions for any duties well in advance and inform instructor

Let Instructor know if workload becomes a problem; we may be able to adjust

  • Attend a 15-30 minute meeting with Instructor on days after HW is due (exact time TBD)
  • Grade HW by mutually agreed weekly deadline using SpeedGrader on Canvas
  • If you suspect copying/cheating, grade normally and note which students
  • Notify Instructor promptly of any problems keeping up with grading, or problems with answer keys
  • Communicate clearly any issues which will affect returning graded work in a timely fashion
