I study stellar and gas dynamics in galactic nuclei. Close encounters between stars and compact objects in a galactic nucleus lead to unique electromagnetic and gravitational wave sources, including tidal disruption events (TDEs). TDEs occur when a star is scattered close enough to a supermassive black hole to be dismembered. They are a natural laboratory for the formation of black hole accretion flows, and in rare cases the launch of relativistic jets. I use a combination of semi-analytic and numerical methods to understand the physics within galactic nuclei.
