As this is my first regular column since we’ve begun the academic year, I would like to take a few moments, not only to introduce a few new members of my leadership team, but more importantly provide you with an update on some activity that took place over the summer, including a better way for us to communicate.

Last week, we announced Academic Futures: Rethinking the university—the futures of learning and discovery, a campus-wide initiative whereby we will collectively engage in a multi-year discussion about what we want the future of teaching and scholarship to look like. We have set up a website where you can get involved, provide feedback, schedule meetings or view the process. I strongly encourage you, whether you are a faculty member, staff or student, to visit this website and engage in this very important process, which I believe to be one of the most important conversations we’ve ever had as a university.

Additionally, in response to recommendations from the Faculty Communications Committee, we have set up a “one-stop” webpage for faculty to access resources and learn about meetings, committees and events in which they may be interested. The page provides not only agendas and materials for Deans Council and the regular Chairs and Directors breakfast, but also descriptions and details surrounding Provost-established committees and their work.

This webpage, for which there are also staff and student counterparts, remains a work in progress and will be updated continuously, but I wanted you to be aware the information is available. We will continue our work to extend and improve two-way communications with faculty, staff and students, and I want to thank the committee for its ongoing work in helping us to do so.

Finally, I’ve been fortunate to have two interim deans join my leadership team this summer. Professor Jim White is interim dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor Leslie Reynolds is interim dean of University Libraries. Also, Dyonne Bergeron was named assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs. I hope you welcome Dyonne to CU, and Jim and Leslie to their new roles.

We have a very exciting semester ahead of us, and I hope you find ways to get involved, stay informed and help us make CU Boulder a better university and community.
