The Boulder campus recently had a chance to show its resiliency and adaptability in the face of an extreme weather campus closure. The September flooding provided a multi-day implementation of many of the policies and procedures our campus has in place for closures and emergencies, and I join Chancellor DiStefano in extending my deep appreciation for how our community reacted to the crisis.

Earlier this month I sent our annual reminder of campus closing procedures during emergencies, and I want to make sure you are familiar with its key points.

One of the most important items for a member of our community is knowing when and where to access campus closure announcements. When closures occur, our communication process begins early. We will always aim to let you know if we will be closing the campus by 5:30 a.m. on the day of the closure, if not sooner.

The quickest and most reliable way to learn about a closure is through the CU Alert system, which is the campus’ emergency notification system. When you visit, you can learn more about the CU Alert system and the other media, social media and notification channels we use to share closure and emergency information.

I also call upon departments and programs across campus to develop call lists and closure implementation procedures that are appropriate for your units. Supervisors should know how to contact their employees - especially those employees designated as Essential Personnel - in a closure situation.

As a member of the CU-Boulder community, I encourage you to take some time to familiarize yourself with the Disaster Leave Guidelines as well as the Campus Closing Procedures, and become an informed and active partner in these rare times when we must close.
