The time has come to start the process of electing new student representatives for the University of Colorado’s Student Government, or CUSG.
CUSG is a tremendous force on our campus, and has control and power in multiple areas of campus, including deciding where student fees are allocated. There are two elections each year, one in the fall and one in the spring, however the spring election is often larger because more positions are available.
During the upcoming spring election, there are many positions available, including three tri-exec positions, four representatives at large for legislative council, two Arts and Science student government executives/co-senators, five ASSG representatives, two Engineering co-senator positions, University of Colorado Engineering Council president and vice president, and UCEC representatives positions.
In order to run for any of these positions, students must pick up a petition packet at the front desk in the CUSG office, room 125 in the UMC, and have it returned by Monday, March 11, at 5 p.m.
In order to be eligible to run, students must be paying full CUSG student fees, which is determined by the election commissioner, John Michael Thistle. Also, candidates must acquire a certain number of University of Colorado student signatures: Those running for tri-executive need 150 signatures, representatives at large need 75, ASSG co-senators need 50, and ASSG reps need 25 signatures.
After petitions are turned in, students who have chosen to take part in the election process as a candidate must come to a mandatory candidates meeting on the evening of Wednesday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Hellems 252. Candidates who fail to appear at this mandatory meeting or who fail to send an authorized representative chosen by the candidate will not appear on the spring ballot. Candidates must also bring a student ID for verification by the election commissioner.
CUSG would like the strongly encourage any one and everyone to be apart of this spring election process, and help this election be one of the largest and most successful in school history!
