A pedal-powered interactive video installation called Epiphyte will be on display from April 7 through May 7 in the lobby of the ATLAS Institute building at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The installation is part of the 'Communikey' Festival of Electronic Arts, which is being held in a variety of venues throughout Boulder and culminates with a three-day event over Earth Day weekend April 18-20. The events highlight global issues of sustainability in a technology-based culture.

The ATLAS installation will feature a stationary bicycle and a software program that manipulates a video.

As the bike is pedaled forward, the video plays backward. The pedaling creates a visual metaphor of product development as it goes from factory to consumer. The end result allows for reflection as the installation reveals the social and environmental impact and the often counter-intuitive costs of everyday consumption on a global scale.

ATLAS, the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society, is an educational institute that integrates technology with the arts and humanities. The institute is located at 18th Street and Euclid Avenue on the CU-Boulder campus.

Other venues for the Communikey festival include the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Arts, 1750 13th St.; Trilogy, 2017 13th St.; and Boulder City Park at 13th street and Canyon Boulevard.
