Students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will celebrate Engineering Days with several offbeat but instructive activities April 12 through April 14.

Hosted by the University of Colorado Engineering Council, Engineering Days is an annual celebration of the engineering profession and a chance for students to apply their engineering skills in creative ways.

Events will begin Wednesday with a free doughnut give-away and demonstration of equipment by the Boulder Fire Department on the west side of the Engineering Center from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The annual college egg drop sponsored by Theta Tau will be held Thursday beginning at about 1 p.m. in the courtyard at the base of the Engineering Center Office Tower. The college egg drop will be preceded by a high school egg drop starting at 11 a.m., challenging students to design devices that protect an egg from breaking during an eight-story fall.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Entry Most Destroyed Without Damaging Egg, Largest Volume Entry, Crowd Pleaser, Dean's Choice, and Best Use of an Engineering Principle.

Friday events will include Sigma Gamma Tau's Vertical Take Off and Landing Challenge, in which students launch handmade balsa wood rockets on the field east of the business school, and a water balloon launch contest with music and free sandwiches provided at the Engineering Quad. Both events are scheduled to start at noon.
