A University of Colorado student representing the school's first-place Solar Decathlon team has been invited to testify before the energy subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Science Wednesday.

Jeff Lyng, a graduate student in the civil, environmental and architectural engineering department who served as project manager, will speak at a hearing titled "Winning Teams and Innovative Technologies from the 2005 Solar Decathlon."

The hearing will be in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST. The hearing can be viewed through a live Webcast at http://www.house.gov/science/webcast/index.htm.

Representatives of the New York Institute of Technology, Rhode Island School of Design, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy also were invited to speak at the hearing.

CU won the first-place trophy in the Solar Decathlon in both 2002 and 2005. The contest challenges students to design, build and operate the most attractive, efficient and comfortable solar home, while educating the public about alternative energy technologies.

The CU project was a two-year effort involving about 30 students from the College of Architecture and Planning and the College of Engineering and Applied Science, with Professors Julee Herdt of architecture and Michael Brandemuehl of engineering serving as faculty advisers.
