Harry Boyte, a national and international expert on civic engagement, will speak on "Higher Education: Architects of a Democratic Way of Life" at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Oct. 27.

Boyte will talk from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in University Memorial Center room 235. The talk is sponsored by the CU-Boulder Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement and is free and open to the public.

"Dr. Boyte is one of the nation's foremost higher education civic engagement leaders," said Peter Simons, director of the institute. "This should be an excellent educational opportunity for local teachers and community leaders, as well as CU-Boulder faculty and staff, to learn more about effective teaching of American democratic principles."

Boyte is a senior fellow at the Hubert Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, founder and co-director of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship and a member of the graduate school faculty at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of eight books on democracy, citizenship, community organizing and citizen action.

In addition to the public lecture, Boyte will present a workshop for CU-Boulder faculty and staff on organizing approaches to civic engagement.
