Ken Krechmer, an internationally recognized authority on standards and founder of Communications Standards Review, will present a series of public lectures at the University of Colorado at Boulder beginning Tuesday, Nov. 16.

The series is designed to help build a broad understanding of how technical standards are developed, a topic that has sparked widespread interest in recent years due to rapid developments in information and communication technology. Krechmer is expected to address the standards aspects of the U.S. government's antitrust suit against Microsoft.

CU-Boulder's Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program and the International Center for Standards Research, of which Krechmer is a visiting fellow, are sponsoring the series. The ICSR is funded through a Program of Excellence grant awarded to the telecommunications program by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education.

Krechmer's first talk, "The Fundamental Nature of Standards," will be on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 4 p.m., he will present a telecommunications seminar on "Six Dimensions of Standards" in the ITP Conference Room of the Engineering Center, room ECCR 265.

A third talk by Krechmer on Thursday, Nov. 18, titled "Communication Standards and Patent Rights: Conflict or Coordination," will be held at noon in room 157 of the Fleming Law Building.

The series will close with the seminar, "The Principles of Open Standards," on Thursday, Nov. 18, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., in room ECCR 1B28 of the Engineering Center.
