EYEWITNESS TO HURRICANE KATRINA 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 15 Continuing Education room 140 Susan Feeney, a senior editor at NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and James O’Byrne, features editor of The Times-Picayune, will talk about covering Hurricane Katrina -- finding sources and interviewing survivors. O'Byrne was among those at the epicenter of the newspaper’s coverage of Katrina, evacuating the newsroom on one of the last trucks out, then overseeing the construction of a satellite newsroom in Baton Rouge. Feeney began her career in New Orleans, and has spoken on several campuses around the country about media coverage of Katrina.
HEATHER HACH JUDGES 'THE SEARCH FOR ELLE WOODS' MTV on Monday nights MTV’s “Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods” is an eight-part reality show contest to select a replacement for Laura Bell Bundy who stars in the Broadway musical. Heather Hach ('93), a co-producer and writer for the musical, is one of three judges. Contact: Elizabeth.Gaeddert@Colorado.edu AD STUDENTS WIN GOLD PENCIL AT ONE SHOW Elliot Nordstrom ('08) and senior Phil VanBuren (09) won a Gold Pencil at the 2008 One Show College Competition on May 9. The premier international Creative Competition, it is sponsored by New York City's One Club. While CU has won a number of Pencils in past competitions, this was the School's first Gold Pencil. Three other CU teams were selected as Merit Finalists. The assignment for this year's competition was to develop advertising for Doritos. The School sent Phil to the awards ceremony in New York City where he picked up his team's Pencil while Elliot attended graduation. Both the Pencil winners and the Merit Finalists will have their work published in the 2008 One Show Annual which also features all of the work by the winning professionals. Read More STUDENT REVIEW OF TIGUAN POSTED ON ROAD & TRACK VW of America launched its new Tiguan "crossover utility vehicle" with the help of about two dozen journalism students in May. Students were "media shepherds" to more than 100 automotive journalists in Boulder to test drive the new cars. Students also drove the cars and wrote reviews. The nine-month program offers journalists an opportunity to deepen their understanding of environmental issues and policy through coursework, seminars and field trips in the region. Read More DAN PACHECO ('94) WINS KNIGHT GRANT $837,000 for an innovative idea for community news Pacheco won the grant for a proposal to develop "printcasting," which will allow individuals to easily create ad-supported, customized publications with a mix of local news and information. The software will help aggregate feeds from news organizations, bloggers or newsletters, for example, so that would-be publishers can pick and choose among them to create a niche publication.
