Welcome to the Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement (IECE).
Founded in 2005, the IECE's purpose is to nurture and encourage ethical and civic education at the University of Colorado Boulder, to prepare our students for a lifetime of service to society as thoughtful, ethical and engaged citizens and contribute to the vitality of the many communities we serve from the local level to the global. The IECE is building on the momentum already established to make ethical and civic engagement a defining characteristic of our educational community.
The health of our communities and democracy depends on an engaged and informed citizenry. The university should play an important role in supporting and providing students with the knowledge, skills, experiences and motivation to contribute to the common good.
The IECE serves as a catalyst and facilitator for this effort.
Faculty will now be able to label their civic engagement/service learning courses in the course search. This process will enable students to easily search for such courses and faculty to advertise them. This notation will also appear on student transcripts. For more information, click here.
The IECE’s Student Worker Alliance Program (SWAP), received The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County’s NOVA Award on 7/29/11. Twenty–two programs were nominated. The award is a plaque by John Haertling and a $5,000 check for SWAP. This is a testament to the students who coordinate the program and the 125 student volunteers. The NOVA Award honors innovation in programs/services or innovations in business operations, within Boulder County's non-profit sector. The NOVA Awards were established by The Community Foundation in 1997.
The Student Worker Alliance Program is a dynamic grassroots student run organization, which pairs CU students with predominantly immigrant university service workers to provide free and convenient English language classes.. We are thrilled to have this exciting and much needed program work with the institute. For more information click here!
The Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement and the Office of International Education/Study Abroad Program have developed a New Service Learning Abroad which integrates Study Abroad and service to local communities (Service Learning). Service Learning Study Abroad Programs give students the unique and powerful opportunity to combine their passions for study abroad and service to global communities: a truly transformative experience. This is an exciting addition to Study Abroad programs and meets the increasing demand for such programs. For more information, click here
