Mines Geology Museum and the Denver-area Regional Exploration Geologists’ Society

The Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, the Friends of Mineralogy, Colorado Chapter and the Denver Region Exploration Geologists’ Society invite interested professionals, laymen,  and students to participate in the Second Eugene E. Foord pegmatite Symposium in Golden, Colorado. There will be an ice-breaker reception at the CSM Geology museum Friday evening, July 15, 2016. This will be followed by two full days of talks, July 16-17, followed by two days of field trips. The presentations will be held at the Green Center on Campus.

The Symposium convening committee is interested in presentations on the pegmatite geology and mineralogy in the Four Corners region, as well as world-wide occurrences, pegmatite genesis, pegmatite mineralogy/geochemistry, structure and crystallography, and pegmatite mining histories. We invite talks for 30 minute time slots (20-25 minutes presentation, 5-10 minute questions). We prefer PowerPoint presentations but can accommodate 35-millimeter slide presentations (80-slide carousels). Posters are also invited for presentation using the Geological Society of American standards (4' x 8' or 46-1/8" high by 94-3/4"wide or 117cm x 240 cm). The technical level of the presentations is encouraged to appeal to both professionals and interested laymen. We will be providing the sound system and both wireless (lapel, hand-held or headset) and wired microphone as well as a wireless computer slide advancer.

Digital submittal using the symposium template in Word format may be made by mail or email. If oral presentation slots are oversubscribed, presenters will be given the option of a poster session.

The registration fee for the symposium which includes the Friday night reception, two days of presentations, a black and white hardcopy proceedings volume, a color digital proceedings volume, and free field trips is $100. Registration for full-time University (Student ID required) or high school students is $50. Registration fees are waivered for field trip leaders but they still need to register. Speakers, poster presenters and field trip leaders are also provided with a one year (2016-2017) free membership in both Friends of the CSM Geology Museum and the Friends of Mineralogy, Colorado Chapter.

Housing is available in motels-hotels in Golden. The historical downtown of Golden is just a quarter mile from the meeting center where numerous restaurants, cafes and hotels can be found. Lodging options in Golden, CO for Symposium, July 15-19, 2016.

Field trips are free to symposium attendees but each field trip will be restricted to 20 people. Transportation is not provided, but attendees will be given the opportunity to carpool. Although sign-up for these trips will be first registered, first on the list, preference will be given to out-of-state attendees. Those persons who are Colorado residents and thus might not be able to attend a particular field trip will be able to attend a latter guided field trip to the same locality. Not all field trips require four-wheel drive vehicles.

Field trip participants will be required to sign a liability release. For third party liability insurance participants will also need to belong to either an American Federal Mineral club that provides that insurance, Friends of the CSM Geology Museum or the Friends of Mineralogy Colorado Chapter. If not already a member of a federation club, membership to either of the others can be purchased with registration.

A completed registration includes the following forms:

- Completed Part I (and optionally Part II) form(s)
- Paid registration fee and any other associated fees (includes: payment for joining (if not a member of a Rocky Mountain Federation Mineral club) to provide coverage under a 3rd party liability insurance coverage).
