This will be the first hidden curriculum of the year, and we are thrilled to continue this series! Join us to explore the unique challenges and opportunities of attending graduate school at a predominantly white institution (PWI). This workshop is designed for GAR fellows to gain valuable insights and strategies for successfully navigating the academic environment.

Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett, an award-winning psychologist and expert on anxiety among African Americans, and author of Soothe Your Nerves, will host a conversation on "The Anxiety of Being the Only.” Being and Only—the only woman, the only person of color, the only one openly suffering from a mental or physical illness—can contribute to existing and promote the development of mental health issues. At the same time, bringing your whole self to work, school or research—even when you are an “only” can be a huge strength.

This is open to all students, faculty, and staff.

Join us for an evening of fun, networking and relaxation at the Office of Graduate Access and Retention Game Night. This event is designed to foster connections and community among GAR fellows in a casual, enjoyable setting, encouraging participants to unwind and build lasting relationships with peers.

In our first session, we will focus on building the foundation for sistahood and give an overview of the program and its expectations. Participants will also share their personal journeys in STEM and discuss the challenges and triumphs they've faced.

The Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) Program is an esteemed 10-week residential experience that invites undergraduates from across the country to our campus, offering them the opportunity to delve into STEM research under the guidance of our distinguished faculty mentors and to sculpt a robust foundation for their graduate studies.

The AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship program aims to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding historically minoritized graduate students, and to enhance these students’ competitiveness for academic appointments at major research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring, capacity building activities, and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies. 

All applications for the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research must be completed using the AERA online application portal by 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024. Late applications and supporting materials will not be accepted.

JRF Scholars receive college scholarships of up to $35,000 over four years and are financially sponsored to attend JRF‘s annual, four-day “Mentoring and Leadership Conference“ in New York City and other events throughout the year. Aside from generous financial support, Scholars benefit from a comprehensive, four-year program that includes career guidance, internship and permanent job placement, travel abroad and leadership and practical life skills training.
