Welcome to the Black Women’s Alliance CU Boulder Homepage! Black Women's Alliance CU Boulder was founded by CU Boulder alumnus Garmai Matthew, Sarah Gilliard and Emily Cornellin 2016.

Mission Statement: To connect, empower, and foster meaningful relationships among Black  Women identified students at CU Boulder.

Tagline: "In Unity, Community, and Empowerment"

Goals:

  1. Provide a safe space for dialogue around issues relevant to Black women at CU Boulder
  2. Platform for networking & building a strong community for these women at CU Boulder
  3. Demonstrate continuous empowerment, love and celebration of black women at CU Boulder

Meet Our Black Women's Alliance CU Boulder Board
President: Khaleigh Reed

Khaleigh serves as the President of the Black Women’s Alliance and is a senior majoring in Journalism with a minor in Media Production. She brings a love for art, music, and exploration to her leadership, creating a welcoming and creative environment for Black women across campus. Her commitment to community and her passion for uplifting others continue to shape BWA’s impact at CU Boulder.

Vice President: Tiana Brown

Tiana serves as the Vice President of the Black Women’s Alliance and is a sophomore majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Spanish. She is passionate about community building and brings warmth, enthusiasm, and leadership to every space she enters. Her dedication to creating meaningful connections and supporting Black women across campus continues to strengthen BWA’s impact.

Secretary: Hannah Abbey

Hannah serves as the Secretary of the Black Women’s Alliance and is a junior studying MCDB and Psychology with a minor in Spanish. She brings creativity, spirit, and reliability to the board, helping keep BWA organized and thriving throughout the year. Her continued commitment to the organization and her warm presence make her an invaluable part of the BWA community.

 
Treasurer: Makayla Gale

Makayla serves as the Treasurer of the Black Women’s Alliance and is a senior majoring in Creative Technology and Design. She brings a passion for innovation and plans to pursue VR and AR development after graduation, while also balancing her love for dance, tennis, and singing. Her enthusiasm for community and her commitment to supporting new members make her a vibrant and valued part of the BWA board.

 
Programs Coordinator: Ashoya Edwang

Ashoya serves as the Programs Coordinator for the Black Women’s Alliance and is a junior studying Public Health and Psychology. She brings creativity, warmth, and strong organizational energy to the board, helping shape engaging programs that strengthen community across campus. Her love for baking, reality TV, and connecting with others adds a personal touch to her leadership, making her a vibrant and valued part of BWA.

 
Social Media Manager: Vera Gitau

Vera serves as the Social Media Manager for the Black Women’s Alliance and is a junior majoring in Integrative Physiology on the pre‑dental track. She brings creativity, consistency, and a strong sense of purpose to BWA’s digital presence, helping amplify the organization’s mission across campus. Her excitement to serve and her commitment to uplifting the community make her a valuable and inspiring member of the executive board.

Graduate Chair: Garmai Matthew

Garmai serves as the Graduate Chair of the Black Women’s Alliance and is a two‑time CU Boulder alumna with a BA in Social Science and Chinese and an MBA from the Leeds School of Business. She brings a deep passion for entrepreneurship, strategy, ethical business, and circular fashion to her leadership, helping guide BWA with vision and purpose. Her commitment to empowering Black women and strengthening community continues to shape the organization’s legacy on campus and beyond.
