The First Day

Goal: Ensure your new hire feels welcomed and comfortable, and has a strong agenda for the day.
- Greet and show them workspace
- Show them where to put personal items (coat, lunch, etc.)
- Meet coworkers who are in office
- Go over agenda for the day/week
- Tour of facility/office. Things to include on your tour could be:
- Their workspace
- Supervisor workspace
- Restrooms/drinking fountain
- Supply room
- Printers
- Lunch/break room
- Have IT liaison help new hire log in/get access to their work computer if this has not already occurred.
- Set aside time to ensure an understanding of the technology/platforms your team uses and add them to necessary shared folders: Zoom, Teams, SharePoint, etc.
- Have your first meeting with your new hire. Things to discuss in your first 1:1 include:
- Parking and transportation
- Establishing expectations
- Work hours/schedule/lunch
- Asking for time off (sick/vacation)
- Best way(s) to communicate with you/the team
- Dress code
- Workplace norms/behaviors
- In-person vs. virtual meetings expectations
- Provide building/office keys if applicable. Have a team member walk them to Access Services if they need to pick them up.
