Velda Khoo
Current PhD student
Department of Linguistics

My main research focuses on Singlish and Singaporean identity. As a linguist, I work within paradigms of sociocultural linguistics and linguistic anthropology and examine facets of language and identity, language in globalization, and language politics. Through my professional work on Singlish, I engage in debates on the linguistic status of Singlish, and complicate fundamental assumptions of language: what is language, how language emerges from usage, and how language facilitates identity construction.
