I am a doctoral student in the Department of Linguistics with particular interest in the incorporation of an ethnographic approach to language documentation. I am drawn to languages of post-colonial and “current-colonial" societies whose exposure to systems of power – both overt and covert – plays an immense role in their concurrent language ideologies, language change, and language loss. I feel it would be an immense disservice to study these languages without taking into account how their relationships to dominant languages and groups has affected their course.
