Graduated with PhD in 2017

Steven is completing a PhD in Musicology at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2017. His dissertation was based on three dissertation trips between 2012 and 2015 to Accra, Ghana, where he sang with government workplace choirs, recorded interviews, and conducted archival research. His dissertation engages discourses of hybridity, Peircian semiotics, and postcolonial theory to develop a history of choral music in Ghana that reveals how it functioned in the context of the colonial and post-independence environments. A resultant article, “African Musical Hybridity in the Colonial Context: An Analysis of Ephraim Amu’s ‘Yɛn Ara Asase Ni,’” was published in Ethnomusicology (2016).
