My academic interests include pedagogical linguistics, first and second language acquisition, phonology, and linguistic pragmatics. My dissertation has to do with best practices in the elementary bilingual classroom; in particular, how teachers issue directives in the classroom (whether for instruction, classroom management, or other purposes) and how learners interpret and respond to them. I am also researching how learners come to appropriate language and other social practices in sundry contextual environments. My future aims include continuing to teach first and second languages, researching both language and cultural acquisition and advocating for Latinos in educational arenas and elsewhere.
