Sophie Castillo

  • McNair Scholar
  • ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Sophie received her  BS in Environmental Engineering with a minor in Global Engineering from CU Boulder in 2023. Her selected emphasis was air quality, and she worked on the same air quality research project with Dr. Shelly Miller from sophomore year all the way up to graduation. She studied abroad in Madrid, Spain for one semester and went to do an internship in Barcelona, Spain that following year. She was a BOLD scholar and has been involved in Engineers Without Borders. Also in 2023, she was the recipient of the Global Engagement Award from the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences! She was a semi-finalist for a Fulbright research grant and was accepted into Carnegie Mellon, Columbia University, CU Boulder, and UC Berkeley for an MS/PhD program but has decided to attend grad school at UC Berkeley (and hopefully go abroad for part of it or apply for another Fulbright). From Sophie: "I cannot thank McNair Scholars enough for all of the help and support they provided me with during my journey to grad school. I hope one day I am able to give back to the McNair Scholars program and help support other underrepresented students in graduate education the way the program helped me."
