Sam Gregory is an award-winning human rights advocate and technologist with 25-plus years of experience addressing emerging technologies and civic engagement. As executive director of WITNESS, he leads efforts to harness video and technology for human rights. In 2024, WITNESS won the inaugural Peabody Impact Award for "tirelessly championing the power of emergent media technologies in defense of human rights around the world,” and for how its work has "profoundly changed the world for the better."
His pioneering work to Prepare, Don’t Panic on deepfakes and multimodal AI has shaped policy and public discourse on deepfakes, authenticity mechanisms and generative AI to focus on their global and human rights implications. A trusted expert, Gregory has testified before the United States House and Senate on AI regulation, given a TED Talk on how to prepare better for deepfakes, and initiated the global Deepfakes Rapid Response Force, connecting journalists with forensic specialists. He holds a PhD from the University of Westminster and an MPP from the Harvard Kennedy School.
