Riana Pfefferkorn is a policy fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. A lawyer by training, Pfefferkorn researches the law and policy implications of emerging technologies, including A.I. Her research spans topics in privacy and civil liberties, encryption policy, digital surveillance, cybersecurity, and online trust and safety. In 2020, she published the first law journal article to comprehensively assess the impact of deepfake technology on evidentiary proceedings in court. Before coming to Stanford in 2015, Riana was an associate in the internet strategy and litigation group at the law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and a law clerk to the Hon. Bruce J. McGiverin, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. A graduate of the University of Washington School of Law and Whitman College, Riana is a member of the California and Washington state bars.
