Basile Simon is the director of the law program and special projects at the Starling Lab, co-created by Stanford University and University of Southern California. An expert in the use of cryptography for capture, storage and verification techniques, Simon is an advisor to the Hala Protocol on the collection and use of audio as evidence and the Explosive Weapons Trauma Care Collective. His work encompasses engineering, law and journalism and focuses on accountability for causing civilian harm. He is the co-founder of Airwars, a human rights watchdog, and remains a long-term advisor to their practice. A member of the Investigative Commons collective in Berlin, Simon practiced as a technical journalist and newsroom technologist for a decade, pioneering data-driven and open-sources techniques.
