Launch of the Visual Evidence Lab
Justice by Video brought together scholars and practitioners with the goals of developing new avenues for research and potential policy proposals addressing the following questions: What is needed to improve legal processes regarding the use of video as evidence? How can research help? The workshop concluded with a public screening of the Academy-award nominated documentary Incident, and a Q&A session with producer Jamie Kalven. Hon. Roderick Kennedy, co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Scientific Evidence Committee, Dalila Mujagic, legal lead at WITNESS’s Video as Evidence Program, and Yael Granot, an assistant professor in psychology at Smith College, participated in an expert roundtable discussion about the film. The workshop was sponsored by the Institute of Behavioral Science, the College of Media, Communication, and Information, the Center for Documentary and Ethnographic Media, the Center for African and African American Studies, the Department of Media Studies, and the Department of Journalism.
