Calkins

Michael Calkins

Assistant Professor
Physics
Michael is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU). He was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Applied Mathematics here at CU. He obtained his graduate degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles (2010), and his bachelors degree from the University of California, Berkeley (2004). He enjoys spending time with his family, staying hydrated, and taking long walks in the woods.

Graduate Students

Orvedahl

Ryan Orvedahl

Ryan is currently a graduate student in the Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences department at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU). He received his Master's degree from CU (2016) and his undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University (2013). His research involves computational fluid dynamics, where supercomputers do most of the work. When not conducting research, Ryan can be found at a remote campsite with no internet connection or on the golf...
Meredith

Meredith Plumley

Meredith is a graduate student in the Department of Applied Mathematics at CU. She received her undergraduate degree in mathematics and statistics from Washington University in St. Louis. She works in the mathematical geosciences/GFD group within Applied Math and Physics and her research covers rotating convection and planetary magnetic field generation. Meredith loves taking part in all the outdoorsy activities that Colorado has to offer, including the state sport of...
Yan

Ming Yan

Ming is a graduate student in the geophysics program within the Department of Physics. He obtained his Bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology (USTC) in 2016. Ming is studying the influence of magnetic fields on convection and rotating convection via direct numerical simulation.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Maffei

Stefano Maffei

Stefano is currently a Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU). His main scientific interests are the study of the dynamics of rapidly rotating flows in presence of magnetic fields and the observation of interannual to decadal fluctuation in the geomagnetic field. He obtained his PhD in Geophysics in 2016 at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) and his Master's degree in Physics at the University...

Undergraduate Students

Talal

Talal Al Refae

Talal is an undergraduate student with a double major in Physics and Mathematics. Talal's research is focused on understanding boundary-layer instabilities in libration-driven fluid systems.

Mitchell Krouss

Mitchell is an undergraduate student majoring in physics. Mitchell is studying the influence of magnetic fields on convection, as it pertains to the interior dynamics of planets and stars.
