Welcome to the Child Language Learning Laboratory!

The Child Language Learning Lab (CLLL) is directed by Dr. Pui Fong Kan.  Our research focuses on bilinguals who learn one miniroty language (L1) from birth at home and start to learn a community language (L2) during their early childhood.  Due to different learning opportunities in each language, typically-developing bilingual children might have lower language skills in either language or both languages at a single time point. Because of the lack of valid clinical language measures for bilingual children, many bilingual children were overidentified as having language impairments while many were not identified until much later.

Our studies examine how typically-developing bilingual children learn two languages and investigate the characteristics of bilingual children with language impairments. Our long-term goal is to develop language measures that allow us to differentiate language impairment from language difference.
