“At the end of the day, neither Barry Goldwater nor Nelson Rockefeller won New Hampshire in 1964 – which was really interesting.
“Eight or nine days ahead of the primary in this very contested race, a group of people in Congress said, ‘You know what? We don’t like either one of them.’ They thought the best candidate was former Massachusetts Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., who had run for vice president with Nixon in 1960 and was then the ambassador to South Vietnam.
“He never got within 10,000 miles of the state. They started a write-in campaign. On primary night in 1964, Sen. Cabot Lodge beat both of the other candidates.”
