The Colorado Diversity Initiative supports underserved undergraduate students in STEM who want to engage in research and prepare for graduate studies.

Through its membership in the Leadership Alliance, a consortium of 35 institutions of higher education, CU Boulder offers the Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) Program. This 10-week residential internship brings undergraduates from institutions nationwide to CU Boulder to engage in science, technology, math and engineering research with a faculty mentor and prepare for graduate school.

The program for rising juniors and seniors prepares a diverse pool of undergraduates for PhD study and successful careers in STEM fields. As a Leadership Alliance program, SMART encourages applications from all undergraduate students including those belonging to groups that have been historically underrepresented among researchers in STEM fields.

A comprehensive list of all summer research programs can be found on the Pathways to Science website, under “undergraduates.” On this page there is also a “Resource Toolbox” that includes information and tips on how to prepare successful applications.
