What to Expect

Joining a fraternity or sorority offers many opportunities for personal growth and development. Members can expect to find a strong sense of community and camaraderie, as well as numerous chances to take on leadership roles.

Through participation in chapter events and operations, students can build valuable skills that will serve them well beyond their college years. Additionally, Greek life often emphasizes academic success and service to the community, helping members to excel both in the classroom and in their personal endeavors.

Things to consider before applying

As you learn about the different councils and chapters at CU Boulder, we encourage students to think about the three S’s:

Save money: Understand that joining a fraternity or sorority is a financial commitment and you may need to account for costs during your membership.

Serve your community: Participate in community service and giving back—this is something that many organizations seek in potential new members.

Succeed in the classroom: Many organizations have academic standards they look for in potential new members and hold their current members accountable to.

For questions about membership requirements, letters of recommendation and supplemental application materials, review the specific council page and the national or international website for the organization you are interested in joining. In general, here are a few things to consider when joining a fraternity or sorority.

Financial Commitment

Every chapter has a financial commitment to join. Member dues cover various things like dues to national and international headquarters and councils, chapter operations, chapter events and more. Dues may be more expensive if you live in the chapter house, as it would cover your room and board.

Talking about finances during recruitment is important. As a potential new member, don’t be afraid to ask questions and see what financial support organizations provide.

Requirements

Fraternity and sorority members must be students at CU Boulder, and most chapters require members to be full-time students.

Chapters hold their members to high standards, with a strong emphasis on academic success and personal integrity. Members are expected to maintain good grades, actively participate in chapter events and contribute positively to both the chapter and the broader community.

There are no requirements related to living on campus or commuting—everyone is welcome to join!

Timeline

Whether you’re in your first year or final year at CU Boulder, there are always opportunities to join Greek life. We always encourage Buffs to join in their first years at CU so the fraternity or sorority experience can be weaved into the collegiate experience, but it’s not the only way to join. Sophomores and juniors are allowed to participate in recruitment and intake.

  • Fall semester: Formal recruitment for College Panhellenic Council and CU Interfraternity Council happens during fall semesters, followed by continuous open bidding. You’ll need to register for these formal recruitment periods.
  • Spring semester: Informal recruitment or continuous open bidding occurs for all chapters. Potential new members can fill out appropriate council interest forms.
  • All year: Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council participate in intake year around. Potential new members can fill out the interest form and we can connect you with groups who are recruiting.

By carefully considering your values and exploring the diverse chapters and councils available, you can find a community that resonates with your personal goals and aspirations. Remember to inquire about financial commitments, uphold academic and personal standards and take advantage of the various recruitment opportunities throughout your collegiate journey.
