Joe Zamudio
- Advisory Board Member
- Mineral exploration and remote sensing consultant
- GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Joe received a Bachelor's degree from UC Santa Barbara and Master's and Ph.D. degrees from CU.
After UCSB he worked for four years for mineral exploration companies and the US Bureau of Mines
in Alaska He subsequently came to CU for graduate school. His dissertation focused on analysis of
hyperspectral data for geologic mapping. After receiving his Ph.D., he worked for the U.S. Department
of Energy, where he was principal investigator for a project to evaluate hyperspectral remote sensing
systems for environmental applications. After that, he worked on mineral exploration projects in South
America. Subsequently, he has worked primarily as a consultant, being involved in planning and
coordinating hyperspectral remote sensing surveys, mainly for mineral exploration. He has also been
involved in various remote sensing projects to map vegetation species, measure burn severity after
forest fires, and identify man-made materials from airborne and spaceborne sensors. More recently,
he has analyzed hyperspectral data for environmental cleanup efforts of geologic materials. In
addition, he has taught workshops on multispectral and hyperspectral data analysis using the ENVI
software that was developed by colleagues at CU.
