  • ITAL 4290 - Italian Culture Through Cinema Black and White photo from the 1940's of a woman running up a street waiving

    This course examines the representation of Italian culture through cinema from the mid 1940s till the present time. During the first part of the session we will discuss groundbreaking cinematic styles like Neorealism, the genre of ‘commedia all’italiana’ (comedy Italian-style), and world-renowned auteurs such as Fellini. The second half of the course will be devoted to two contemporary issues in Italian society: immigration and social/urban change, and terrorism and Mafia. Questions?   • ITAL 4140 - What the Hell!?! Dante's Inferno

    What the hell!?!  How can a 700 year-old poem about medieval politics and Christian salvation inspire 21st-century video games, horror films, graphic novels and murder mysteries?
    Join us this summer to find out by reading Dante’s Inferno to discover the enduring power of this poem.  As we read the Inferno, we’ll also study the art. popular literature, games, and films inspired by the poems including Renaissance paintings by Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo, silent films (Inferno, 1911), horror movies (Hannibal, Seven), video games (Dante’s Inferno, Visceral Games/Electronic Arts), and graphic novels (The Hunting Accident: A True Story of Crime and Poetry by Carlson and Blair).   • ITAL 1010 - Beginning Italian 1

    The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are progressively developed in a predominantly oral presentation. Grammatical concepts are explained and practiced through dialogues, written exercises, and conversations. The cultural focus is on the personal world and life of students.
  • ITAL 2110 - Intermediate Italian Grammar and Reading 1
    June 1 - July 24, 2020 - Summer Session C
    Taught by Teaching Professor Priscilla Craven
    Enhances the skills learned in the first-year course and develops greater fluency in understanding and speaking. More emphasis is placed on reading and writing through the use of activities featuring cultural themes that present a realistic portrait of contemporary Italy.
