HAZARDOUS MATERIAL/WASTE eTAG INSTRUCTIONS
REVISED 4-13-21
BACKGROUND
The “Hazmat eTag’” is used to request a pickup of hazardous materials/waste (“Hazmat”). The system
was developed by CU-Boulder’s Environmental Health and Safety (CU-EHS) Hazmat Group (CU-
Hazmat) and CU-Boulder’s Office of Information Technology (CU-OIT) in 2020-21 to replace a
cumbersome paper-based system. The eTag System includes our website, eTag forms, our new wired
tags, a destination email account, and our new Hazmat Database.
PROCESS OVERVIEW
To submit a request for pickup, you will first access our eTags website, then complete one or more eTag
forms, apply your electronic signature, and submit the tag(s). This instruction sheet will guide you
through each step of the process.
eTAGS WEBSITE
The eTags Website consists of a home page, and several associated pages. The home page is where
you initiate the eTag using your contact information, and then create and submit eTags. At the home
page you can also read and print these instructions, and make a request for delivery of wired tags.
COLLECTION OF YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
In order to identify you as an authorized user, and to ensure your ability to verify completeness and
accuracy of your submittals, it is necessary to gather your first and last names, and CU email address.
CREATING AND USING A DOCU-SIGN eSIGNATURE
If your electronic signature has already been created using the computer used to create eTags, you are
ready to go. If not, a few simple steps are required to create your eSignature. The eTags system will
guide you through this process, which is required to be complete only once.
eTAG CREATION & SUBMITTAL
Once your contact info is collected, you are ready to begin creating eTags. The eTag form exists
separately from the home page, so you will be taken to a specific website for this purpose. Once you
have completed all required fields in the eTag, either click the “SUBMIT” button, or click the
“ADDITIONAL TAG” button. Additional eTag are required for hazmat items consisting of more than 8
constituents.
WIRED TAGS
In order to associate your eTag submittal to a physical waste container in your workplace, you must
obtain and complete a wired tag and reference the wired tag number on your eTag submittal. Each
wired tag is uniquely numbered, and forms the basis of our eTag tracking system. To request wired tags,
access the eTags website, click on the “REQUEST WIRED TAGS’ button, and provide your contact
information. You can expect delivery of wired tags within 3-5 business days after making your request.
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU
CU-Hazmat is committed to providing our campus affiliates with outstanding service. The eTag System
will allow us to focus on helping you manage hazardous waste in your workplace in the most efficient
manner, while continuing to make the safety and health of people and the environment our top priority.
