Contest to Register Shared Instruments and Services at CU Boulder
Purpose: To encourage cores and laboratories to register instrumentation and services for sharing on the new Shared Instrumentation Network website by September 30, 2016. This website will facilitate access to these various resources on campus. It is the first tool of its kind at CU Boulder. CU Green Labs is running this contest in partnership with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research because sharing of equipment and other resources contributes to more efficient use of research funds, promotes new collaborations, and may reduce laboratory plug loads by avoiding redundant equipment.
Details: Each instrument or service added to the Shared Instrumentation Network website and indicated as a shared resource before September 30, 2016 will have a raffle ticket awarded to the lab/core/facility/group that manages that instrument or service. The lab/core/facility/ group must select that the instrument or service is available for sharing either within their department, available campus-wide, or available on a case-by-case basis to others on campus to qualify for the contest. If you have specific questions about the website, please contact Joe Dragavon.
Contest Dates: August 10-September 30, 2016
Awards: At a raffle drawing in early October, six raffle tickets will be randomly drawn and each of those winning labs or cores will receive a $100 gift card to a local restaurant of choice. The gift card must be used by a group of individuals. The gift cards for this contest are made possible by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and CU Green Labs.

Poster Design Contest
How awesome would it be to see your creativity on display across campus in the CU Green Labs poster holders? Have you been eager to share with campus actions taken in your lab that could help green other campus labs? Do you have a suggestion or reminder for your department that would help everyone be greener and more sustainably minded? If so, submit a poster for this contest! Individuals or groups of individuals from any laboratory or laboratory department can participate (including undergraduates) whether you are already involved in the CU Green Labs program or not. See information below on poster criteria and the entry categories. Current CU Green Labs Eco Leaders and CU Green Labs student assistants will judge the entries and submit votes for one winning poster in each entry category. The deadline to submit your poster to CU Green Labs has been extended to Thursday March 24, 2016.
Entry Categories:
- Water Conservation
- Energy Conservation
- Lab Solid Waste Reduction/Diversion
- Green Chemistry and/or Hazardous Waste Reduction/Diversion
- Sharing of space, fume hoods, and/or other equipment
Poster Criteria:
- Poster dimensions should be 11 x 17 inches.
- We suggest you make your poster as positive as possible. Instead of highlighting bad behavior, emphasize good laboratory practices!
- Feel free to mention your lab’s name on your poster.
- You may develop your poster using any software you want to (Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint, etc.). Please submit posters as PDFs. However, make sure to save original files so changes can be made at a later date. Changes may be required before winning posters can be displayed on campus based on input from partners of CU Green Labs in Facilities Management, EH&S, etc.
- Submit your poster to CU Green Labs no later than Thursday March 24th as a PDF file.
- Sample posters created by the CU Green Labs Program can be viewed on our Outreach Posters page.
Judging Criteria:
- Impact
- Relevance
- Eye catching design
- Clarity
- If taking your own photographs for your poster, appropriate laboratory personal protective equipment (PPE) should be demonstrated in the photo (long pants, closed toed shoes, lab coat and gloves if applicable)
Awards for the Winners:
A $50 gift card for a local restaurant of choice will be awarded to the winning lab or lab department in each entry category. It is important that the gift card be given to a group of people, though an individual from a lab may submit a poster. Winning posters may also be displayed on campus in the CU Green Labs poster holders, published on our website, and mentioned in the CU Green Labs newsletter.
