At CU Boulder, Being a Sustainable Buff is More Than Just a Pledge, it’s How We Live
Sustainability is at the core of CU Boulder’s values, and it’s more than just a commitment, it’s woven into the way we live. For many students, social and environmental responsibility is a guiding principle, with 90% agreeing that climate change is a major concern for their generation. However, despite widespread concern, only 37% of students strongly agree that CU is making a strong effort to increase its sustainability performance.
But students are already making strides. 60% of students try to make environmentally sustainable choices in their daily lives, and 86% consider their lifestyles to be somewhat to moderately sustainable. Yet, 45% of students want to live even more sustainably, striving to make their future lifestyles “extremely” sustainable.
As we celebrate the achievements of our graduates, it’s clear that being a Sustainable Buff extends far beyond graduation. The Graduation Regalia Loaner Program is one way students are actively living their commitment to sustainability. In May 2024, the Environmental Center loaned out about 30 gowns and caps mostly donated by graduating student staff. By May 2025, that number has grown to 100 gowns (including both undergraduate and graduate styles) and nearly as many caps, thanks to added donation bins at Commencement locations and promotions to those who took the Graduation Pledge. Many borrowers found out about the program through E-Center staff, friends, academic departments like Engineering and Business, and the Commencement website.
But the efforts don’t stop there. As of May 1, 2025, 1000 students have pledged to uphold social and environmental responsibility through the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility. More than 80 different majors and minors are represented by CU Boulder graduates who have taken the pledge. Many of these students heard about the pledge through the CU Commencement website, and they’re excited to continue their commitment by donating their green cords back to the program for future graduates. Some have also pledged to donate their regalia, ensuring the program’s continued growth.
“I’ve participated in many environmentally friendly classes and focused on sustainability in my business minor and plan to uphold these values in my future career!”
“I plan to research any future employers environmental impact and steps they are taking to reduce theirs. I hope to only work for companies with environmental ideologies that match mine.”
“After graduating from CU, I plan to make the world a better place by applying what I’ve learned during my time here to create sustainable solutions that address climate change and environmental injustice. I’ve always admirer the environment for its beauty, diversity, and the sense of peace it brings. Especially the beautiful environment that we have at CU and at Boulder have truly punched me to devote my actions once leaving to keeping it that way. I also believe it's our responsibility to protect it for future generations. I want to be part of the movement that turns awareness into action.”
As you prepare to graduate, consider joining these students who have already taken the pledge, committing to a life of social and environmental responsibility. The Graduation Pledge is not just a symbolic gesture, it’s the beginning of a sustainable future, both personally and professionally.
