Paul Bierman

Paul Bierman is a geoscientist, professor, and author. His research and teaching focus on the interaction of people and Earth’s dynamic surface. He is particularly interested in working at the interface between active research, education, and science policy. Bierman has been at the University of Vermont since 1993. He has studied erosion in Australia, South America, and several countries in Africa and the Middle East.
In Greenland, Bierman is tracing the history of the Greenland Ice sheet over the last several million years, an adventure that repeatedly took him helicoptering over the ice. Bierman works extensively in communicating science to the public. He uses extensive visuals and photographs to teach about the workings of Earth’s surface and in 2024 published When the Ice is Gone, a book for the general public about the history and future of the Greenland Ice Sheet that was one of the New Yorkers Best Books of 2024.
