Matt Gelso (Fin’10) skis along the Owl Creek Chase course between Aspen and Snowmass as a junior. He was the 2010 champion in the NCAA classical race in Steamboat Springs, Colo., in March.

The ski team finished second in the NCAA Championships for the third straight year — behind the University of Denver in each case — and for the ninth time in program history.

“Second place is never our goal,” CU head coach Richard Rokos said after the meet the Buffs hosted in Steamboat Springs, Colo. “It’s an honorable standing, but for us like always, the title is the goal and we invest all our resources toward achieving that goal.”

One skier — Matt Gelso (Fin’10) — captured an individual NCAA title at Steamboat. He claimed victory in the Nordic 10-kilometer classical race. Only one other American-born skier in history has won the NCAA classical race — Northern Michigan’s Christopher Cook in 2003.

Representing the CU women, sophomore Alexa Turzian placed second in the15k freestyle.
